For Indigenous people the history of Thanksgiving is complicated. The stories we tell to celebrate this day are filled with inaccuracies about the relationship between the Pilgrims and Indians. Native American people also like to gather with their families, share love over a meal, and give thanks for life. Rather than spending another Thanksgiving debating the morality of which version of history is right or wrong, we would like to bring attention to something we can all agree is paramount: water.
This holiday season, as we gather to count our blessings, we give thanks for the water. Please join us by spending 22 minutes to stream the short film Water Warriors on PBS.
Water is the life-blood of our entire existence. Native American people call water "our first medicine," as it is the first gift of food that our mothers give to their babies in the womb. Water is sacred, and water is life.
Learn more about this issue by watching Water Warriors, and understand what First Nations people are doing to push back, and protect our water. By taking 22 minutes to watch Water Warriors with loved ones, you will be sharing in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, and turning our attention to give thanks for the water that gives us life.
